Canada Immigration Priorities 2022- 2024:- Canada has so far remained committed to its immigration policy objectives to strengthen the economy, reunite families, and assist those with humanitarian needs.
The immigration levels targets have increased since the pandemic and it has made Canada constantly update its travel restrictions.
Although the application never stopped and many other issues influenced the travel restrictions, COVID remains the main issue influencing Canadian immigration for now. With that being said, here is an overview of major Canadian immigration development to watch out for in the next 1-2 years.

Immigration Levels Plan 2022-2024
According to the current Canadian government immigration levels plan, Canada is looking to welcome 411,000 new immigrants in 2022 and 421,000 in 2023.
This target is higher than Canada’s previous targets and this remains surprising as everyone expected the numbers to reduce but the new immigration minister, Sean Fraser says the numbers might even have to increase due to certain factors like growing labour shortages in Canada, application backlogs, and the federal government’s promise to settle 40,000 Afghan refugees. Canadian Government focus’s on Canada Immigration Priorities 2022-24.

Express Entry
In the coming year, it is expected that we’ll see more major express entry developments. Express entry will likely invite more than only Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates.
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) candidates were the main source of Express entry immigrants before the pandemic, but they have been excluded from the express entry invitations just recently.
Currently, they make up 85% of candidates in the Express Entry pool.
IRCC says inviting more CEC candidates will allow Canada to achieve its goal of landing more immigrants since CEC candidates are a lot in Canada and they’re less likely to face COVID-related obstructions during the processing of their permanent residence.
FSWP candidates tend to be located abroad, so IRCC has excluded them from invitations since they are less likely to land within the time frame in which the newcomer’s target was set.
IRCC wants to continue inviting PNP candidates so that provinces can address their labour market goals through immigration.

What Else Should Be Expected?

  1. Travel Rules:
Just as expected, Canada’s travel rules will continue to evolve because of the pandemic. More travellers seeking entry into Canada will have to undergo vaccination on arrival
  2. PGP 2022:
IRCC says Canada will continue to look forward to admitting 23,500 immigrants under the parents and grandparents program in the coming year.
  3. Trusted Employer System:
The Canadian government intends to launch a trusted employee system for the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) according to the new immigration officer, Sean Fraser; the launching of the system is a priority in the coming years.
  4. Citizenship Applications:
The federal government promised to make Canadian citizenship applications free. IRCC has also promised to allow all citizenship candidates (families inclusive) to be able to submit applications online.
  5. Backlogs:
The pandemic made IRCC’s inventory drastically increase to 1.8 million immigration applications. Because of this, Trudeau has asked Fraser to improve processing times including applications affected during the pandemic.
With all of these in place, immigration to Canada will definitely be on a high for the next two years.

Parents/Grandparents Super Visa to Canada

Super Visa For Parents & Grandparents

There are many ways to come to Canada on a temporary basis for family visits and a super visa is one of them. A super visa is one of the multiple entry Visas as visitors that Canada grants to parents and/or grandparents of Canadian residents and citizens. It provides its holder with multiple entry access up to 10 years of validity of the passport and each stay can be up to two years at each entry. The super-visa option was created mainly for grandparents and parents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to enable them to have long-term stays.

What is the difference between A super visa and a Multiple-entry Visa?

A normal multiple entry visa allows its holder to visit Canada for only a period of 6 months at a stretch. Meanwhile, the Super Visa allows a visitor to stay up to 5 years at a stretch in Canada. The main thing that differentiates both visas is that super visas have a status period of up to two years for every entry.

Super Visa eligibility

Apart from meeting all the other multiple entry eligibility requirements, you must be:
1. A parent or grandparent of permanent residents or Canadian citizens
2. You must have a signed letter from the child or grandchild inviting you to Canada.
The letter should include:
– The names and the total number of occupants in the resident’s or citizen’s household.
– A copy of your child’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document.
3. Medical insurance from an insurance company in Canada. The insurance has to be valid for a minimum of one year and have a minimum of $100,000 coverage. Proof that the insurance has been paid for must also be at hand.
4. Only those who reside outside of Canada are eligible to apply because the application must be done outside Canada.
5. You must be willing to take an immigration medical exam.

Another thing you should take note of is that the child or grandchild (the inviter) must be able to prove that they pass the mark for the lowest income cut-off (LICO) applicable at that time. This can be done with an employment letter showing their salary and the date of hire, tax return documents etc

As a permanent resident or Canadian citizen, this is one of the easiest ways to get your parent or grandparent into Canada for an extended stay.

Bear in mind that the Canadian government will also consider things like the purpose of the visit, your home country and ties to it, the family repute and overall finances. All of these are to make sure that you actually leave at the time stipulated.

Family reunification is one of the pillars of Canadian immigration. There are many immigration programs to do so. The parents and grandparents program is one of the ways to reach that goal.

Parents and grandparents program

Canada’s parents and grandparents program is a lottery system where a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen can sponsor their parents or grandparents to become permanent residents.

How does it work?

The first thing to do to apply for this program is to submit an interest to sponsor to IRCC, then you will enter the lottery system and get invited to apply if you meet all the eligibility criteria. In 2021, 30 000 candidates were drawn from this system.

Eligibility criteria
– You are at least 18 years old
– Be a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident or registered as an Indian under the Canadian Indian act.
– You must meet the minimum necessary income requirements. IRCC needs proof that you can support your family and the people you are sponsoring. Normally they will look at your notice of assessment for the past 3 years.
– Sponsors need to sign an undertaking agreement. The undertaking period is 20 years for residents across Canada while it is 10 years for residents of Quebec. During this time sponsors are financially responsible for their parents and grandparents.
– In addition, your parents will have to undertake medical exams to ensure they are in good health, have a police certificate and submit their biometrics.

What if you haven’t been invited to apply

There are different immigration programs you can do to sponsor your family in Canada. If the parents and grandparents route doesn’t work for you, you can always try the super visa which is the next best alternative to sponsor your family.

The super visa gives the opportunity to your parents and grandparents the opportunity to visit Canada multiple times for 10 years, where they can stay up to 2 years at a time. Eligibility criteria are as follows:

– Have a signed letter from your child or grandchild who invites you to Canada that includes a promise of financial support for the length of your visit
– have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is valid for at least 1 year and at least 100 000 coverage
– Provide medical exams and biometrics
